When and why did you start your business?

I am one of 17 midwives with the Stony Brook practice. The group started in 1996. We have offices in Commack, East Setauket, Bohemia and Hampton Bays and care for women having their babies at Stony Brook University Hospital in Stony Brook.

When and why did you start your business? I just joined the practice in September of 2023. Previously I was with Northwell Peconic Bay Medical Center for 4 years. I made the switch because Stony Brook has always been the leader in excellent care and I am very happy here

What's your story?

In regards to working with women began when I was 18. After High School graduation my options were limited and I really wanted to go to college to study Cultural Anthropology. I was faced with no money and no support to get me there so when two recruiters for the Navy told me they would give me money for college in exchange for my time, I took it. I was trained as a Hospital Corpsman (a medical assistant) and I worked in a busy active duty medical office for 5 years. One of my responsibilities was to assist a midwife reservist once a month, performing women's health exams. I was very blessed to have this exposure.

When I left the Navy I had two young boys of my own, both born with the help of Midwives.

I started a postpartum mother's group that met once a month and one of the women suggested I look into becoming a doula.

I took a weekend long training and began supporting women through their births, either home or hospital. Amazing work!

For five years I also worked as a homebirth assistant to an amazing midwife and mentor, Dale Cook.

We welcomed our third son, born at home with lots of support from two doulas and two midwives.

I was a doula for ten years before I decided to go back to school to earn my Master's in Midwifery.

A long journey but I have so many years of working with women in various roles. This gives me many levels of perspectives, allowing me to see women holistically.

What do you offer?

Midwives provide care to women throughout the lifespan: pre-teen to post menopause. We provide all forms of birth control prescription (pills/IUD, etc), perform annual exams, problem visits, STI screening and treatment, breast care, lactation support with IBCLCs in our practice.

What else do you want people to know?

Midwives in NY are independent although we do work in collaboration with doctors to refer women when a higher level of care is needed.
