Interview with: Deborah Stotzky

When and why did you start your business?

I began my practice in 2000 in NYC.  Shortly after that, I took a three-year leave from NY to practice acupuncture and teach yoga in Cozumel, Mexico.  I returned to NYC in 2004 and I have been practicing there ever since.  I opened my Greenport practice in 2020 and currently see clients in both NYC and Greenport – which has been really wonderful – I love the balance of being in both places.

I became an acupuncturist for the same reason I think many people in the healing professions do what they do - because I found such profound healing as a patient of acupuncture and I was drawn to share it with others as my life’s work.

What's your story?

I grew up in NYC and my family had a “beach house” in Greenport where we came on weekends and summers since I was 10 years old.  I even went to middle-school in Greenport one year.  I now live in the beach house with my husband, who is a beautiful artist and sculptor and my son, who recently moved to Greenport from his home in Mexico.

I love to travel and I love being near the water.  In my life, I have, somehow, only lived on islands  – Manhattan, Sicily, Cozumel Mexico and Long Island (which maybe a peninsula, but I’m not going to split hairs!).

I love to swim, bike, do yoga, walk in the woods and on the beach, paint, dance, mix music, and spend time with my friends, family and animals.  I agree with my mother’s wisdom: “laughter is the best medicine” and “this too shall pass”!

What do you offer?

In my practice I offer acupuncture, cupping, gua sha, hot stone meridian therapy (my personal version of hot stone massage), western herbalism and infrared sauna sessions.  I am also a yoga instructor.

What else do you want people to know?

In Chinese medicine we say: “Where there is pain, there is no flow.  Where there is flow, there is no pain”.  Through acupuncture and other techniques, we are able to move “stuck / stagnant” energy, creating the free flow of energy throughout the system.  “Stuckness” can cause all sorts of issues in the body / mind / spirit and the freeing of this stuckness can restore the body to wellness.   As living beings, we are always confronting obstacles that throw us off balance and we are also always moving towards healing – like a flower moves towards the sunshine.  Acupuncture is a gentle but profound push towards healing.

My style of acupuncture includes Myofascial Release Techniques (including Trigger Point Release) that helps relieve pain, release spasmed muscles, decompress joints, increase range of motion and profoundly relieves pain quickly and effectively.  Because we often manifest in the fabric of our body, our deeper issues, the release of tight muscles is another form of moving stagnation in the body – and the results are often miraculous!

I believe there is a profound difference between the absence of illness and vibrant health.  And that is the goal in all my work – to help my clients connect with their vibrance and thrive in every area of their lives.
