Interview with: Mary J Cognat aka Mary Tonic

When and why did you start your business?

I guess I started my business after I graduated IIN in 2006/2007, but it hadn't yet been my career, as it was more of an "offer help as needed" situation. I was a traveling consultant as a Systems/Business Analyst then, so I coached some of my coworkers along the way. I didn't officially launch Mary Tonic, LLC until October 2020.

What's your story?

I have a few auto-immune issues, so I became interested in nutrition when I began questioning the good old Food Pyramid and the dietary recommendations for type I diabetics like myself. It just didn't make any sense. So I attended IIN years after my initial inquiry and plowed through a collection of books looking for answers, but I hadn't really considered being a coach. I was there to gain knowledge for my own well-being. Since graduating IIN, I became a certified yoga instructor, a level 2 Reiki healer, dabbled in the feminine archetypes, trained as an earth medicine priestess, sat with a few different plant medicines and their devoted shaman, dabbled in belly dance and sacred feminine rituals, did quite a bit of shadow work, became a certified breathwork healer and, well, here I am! I've been on quite the healing journey and I love to teach others how to heal themselves.

What do you offer?

I offer breathwork healing sessions that help people tap into their deepest selves, remove energetic blockages in their bodies, strengthen their intuition and alter their inner voice which may be keeping them stuck in unhealthy cycles. Everyone has a different experience, but I find they receive their own personal medicine, which is always what they need. I also offer integrative wellness coaching, as well as a few classes about understanding food and natural beauty. I also love guiding people about how to begin or traverse their own healing journey.

What else do you want people to know?

I have a group breathwork session every 2nd Thursday at Solntse Hot Yoga in Wading River. Be on the lookout for another group session at Karuna Hot Yoga in Greenport, as well. I also hold private sessions, as well as private group sessions for breathwork.
