Interview with:

UpSculpt Inc

When and why did you start your business?

UpSculpt was founded in 2016 by artist Cindy Pease Roe. Our mission is to empower action against the crisis of ocean plastic pollution by engaging the public through art, science, and educational workshops. We combine upcycling and sculpting to create environmentally conscious art made from 100% marine plastic debris. We use this art to expose the problem of plastic pollution while presenting solutions through a hands-on creative process.

What's your story?

Cindy came up with the idea for UpSculpt after she began creating sculpture from debris she collected along the North Shore of Long Island. She realized that art made from marine plastic carries a powerful message and UpSculpt can bring the community together to learn how to deal with this complex issue while also creating uniquely beautiful art.

What do you offer?

UpSculpt offers workshops, speaking engagements, sculpture commissions and rentals, educational zoom sessions, volunteer opportunities, and much more. We engage in beach cleanups and community art projects, and we love working with schools to conduct educational programming with students of all ages. Our studio and "education station" is located in Southold, NY at Port of Egypt Marine. We are open on summer Saturdays for the public to stop by and check out where we store our plastic, view sculptures, and chat with Bri Sander, our Director of Education and Outreach!
